Author George Khal will share his personal journey that brought him to Iowa, including life in Cairo in the 1950s and 60s after fleeing Palestine in 1948. The author outlines his struggles with familial and cultural expectations in addition to the growing instability in the region that ultimately forced his family to seek refuge in the United States. The First Night of the Crescent Moon is a story of one family's experience as part of the Middle East diaspora.
